Red Dot Design Award 2019
Joewell SPM BT series
“In search of good design” – the Red Dot Design Award is one of the world’s largest design competitions. The Red Dot Label has become established internationally as one of the most sought-after marks of quality for good design.
The haircutting scissors of the Joewell SPM Black series are conceived for professional use. The blades have been manufactured using a powder metallurgical process, resulting in a hardness 12 times that of regular metal. The handle shape conforms to the ergonomics of the hand in different styling techniques, and a protective silicone coating additionally helps to avoid fatigue symptoms. Using ion plating, the scissors are coated in black and are thus particularly abrasion-resistant.
Statement by the Jury
The use of high-quality materials and good ergonomic properties characterise the design of the Joewell SPM Black haircutting scissors
iF Design Award 2018
Joewell SPM series
The iF DESIGN AWARD is one of the most important and prestigious design awards in the world. Every year, several thousand designers, architects and companies from all over the world take part to have their design evaluated by independent design experts.
Joewell SPM series are scissors for professional hairdressers, developed by the Tokosha Company which has a 100-year history of manufacturing scissors in Japan. Based on the results of engineering tests and surveys conducted with hairdressers, powder metal was adopted as the blade material. Compared to the common blade material, powder metal is hard and durable, maintaining sharpness even as hairdressers open and close the blades thousands of times per day. The 3D sculpted handle and finger rest covered with silicone rubber makes the scissors extremely comfortable and adaptable to a variety of cutting techniques.
Statement by the Jury
Perfect at every level, this series of professional haircutting scissors exceed even the highest expectations. Nice to look at, the tactile experience is unparalleled. Metal surface, shape, and rubber areas do a perfect job to fit one's fingers at every working angle and finally the blade movement is extremely smooth.
Good Design Award 2017
Joewell Classic series
The Good Design Award is an award sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, which is given to things with excellent design every year. It is the only comprehensive evaluation and recommendation system of design in Japan
Design of the entry (short length / blade length, almost straight blade line) enables to catch hair tightly and not to slide hair. This design is suitable for "blunt cut" that requires a precise haircut based on "net" (a plan of hairstyle). Blunt cut was developed in 1963, and it is a basis of modern haircut technique. Also, thin-designed handle enables to transmit a subtle feel of cutting a few hairs to fingers. Black Cobalt that has the same shape and different material is very popular for customers who use "New York Dry Cut" that cuts a few hairs each time and designs hairstyle at points.
Statement by the Jury
I was impressed by the sharpness of the cut, with no resistance when cutting. The fit of the scissors is also comfortable. It's as if they have become part of your body when you hold them in your hands. I felt that the straight and lean shape of the scissors, coming from the idea that they are an extension of the fingertips, gives more than mere simplicity. The design has remained unchanged since its launch in 1975, indicating that it is a well-developed design.
